It can be difficult to live with missing teeth, but there are many advances in the dental field that can offer patients an easy solution. Dental implants are one of these solutions. They offer a permanent replacement for lost teeth that require no periodontal surgery or root canal treatment. The procedure is done in two parts: first, the implant is placed under the gums and second, the crown is screwed onto the implant. This allows you to eat normally again without worrying about your smile!
Won-Sang Lee, DDS, is a highly skilled oral surgeon in Dover, New Jersey. Dr. Lee was born in Korea and later moved to Montreal, Canada, then to New York City where he graduated from Columbia University and earned his degree in dental surgery. He completed oral and maxillofacial surgery training at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center and Jacobi Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Lee performs extractions, corrects jaw trauma from issues, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and places and repairs dental implants. His clinical interests include focusing completely on the bone, skin, and muscles of your face, mouth, and jaw. He is a qualified and compassionate oral surgeon ready to give you the first-class care you deserve.
Anyone who has had their natural tooth removed due to decay or injury will need this type of restoration. If you have suffered from gum disease or other oral health issues such as bone loss around your jawbone, then it may also benefit you.
Dental implants offer many advantages over traditional restorative options including bridges and dentures. They can be used with any number of dental procedures, they look more like real teeth than most alternatives, and they provide long-term stability.
The surgery begins with your dentist cutting down the jawbone and opening up the gum tissue to place the implant that has been shaped into a small cylindrical shape. Additional bone graft material can be added at this time if necessary. The implant is placed in its final position where it will fuse with the surrounding bone. Once the healing process is complete, an abutment (a crown) or other restoration is attached to the top of the implant for use as normal.
In some cases, dental implants may not be the best option. If you have gum disease or tooth decay, you should consider other treatments first. In addition, if your jawbone is positioned in a way that makes it difficult to install an implant, implants may not be appropriate for you. However, they are still one of the most effective ways to replace missing teeth and restore chewing function.
The healing process after surgery can take anywhere from six months to two years depending on several factors including:
